l'Esperance orphanage, dormitory. The hut is kept clean at all times, but has
no lighting, windows, and
other amenities, such as cupboards, tables or
chairs which, we
normally take for granted, and yet
their happy smiles can disarm an army of cynics.

Yemane and Dawit during visit at l'Esperance. Dormitories in the background. The trees and flowers
are planted and cultivated by the kids, a formidable feat
in an arid region like Tigrai.

Shower for boys. Kids participate in the building of all constructions. The crude and rough walls often
cause abraisions.

So sad is the situation that beds, when available, are very crude and lacking
blankets and bed clothes and beds are often shared by 2 or more kids. The eldest sleep on the ground to make beds
available for the youngest. Please note the cardboard boxes. These are the only forms of wardrobe available. All
amenities that we take for granted are lacking.

The wonderful meal we so much enjoyed at a reception in l'Esperance. They produce 70%
of all food on their farm.

Coffee served by housemother at l'Esperance. The maize for the
popcorn is grown on their own farm.

Vegetable farm at l'Esperance, where pupils participate in the work outside
of school hours. The farm is more that ten times bigger today.
